Short answer: the classic desert trip from Marrakech to Merzouga takes three days and two nights. Day one crosses the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley, day two reaches the Erg Chebbi dunes for a camel ride and a night in a desert camp, and day three is the long drive back to Marrakech, or on to Fes.
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, so this is a road trip as much as a desert trip. Here is how it works, what to expect and how to make it more comfortable.
The 3-day route, day by day
Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley
You leave Marrakech in the morning and climb the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at about 2,260 metres. After lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village, you continue through Ouarzazate and Skoura along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to a hotel in the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Dades – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
A morning walk in the Todra Gorge, then the road east through Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani. You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, swap the car for a camel and ride into the dunes for sunset. Dinner, music and the night are in a desert camp.
Day 3: Merzouga – Marrakech (or Fes)
Wake up for sunrise over the dunes, ride back and have breakfast. The drive back to Marrakech takes 9 to 10 hours with stops. Many travellers prefer to continue north to Fes instead, which takes about 7 to 8 hours and avoids doing the same road twice.
Is 3 days enough?
Three days works, but it is intense: about 20 hours of driving for one night in the dunes. If you can, take four days, with two nights in the desert area or a night in Ouarzazate on the way back. Or build the desert into a loop, as on our 8-day Sahara tour, which reaches Merzouga from Fes and returns to Marrakech through the gorges, so you never drive the same road twice.
Shared or private desert tour?
- Shared tours from Marrakech are cheap but use minibuses of up to 17 people, fixed stops and large camps.
- Private tours cost more but let you choose your hotels and camp, stop for photos, and start at your own time. They are the better choice for couples, families and anyone who gets tired on long drives.
Merzouga or Zagora?
If you only have two days, Zagora is closer to Marrakech, but its dunes are much smaller. We compare both in our guide Merzouga vs Zagora.
What to pack
- A small overnight bag for the camp; your main luggage stays in the vehicle.
- A warm layer and a hat for the night, even in spring and autumn.
- A scarf to protect your face from sand and sun.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.
- Comfortable shoes you can empty of sand.
When to go
October to April is best. Summer days in Merzouga often pass 40 °C, and nights in December and January can be close to freezing. See our month-by-month guide.
