Short answer: choose Merzouga if you want the classic Sahara of high orange dunes and have at least three days. Choose Zagora only if you have two days from Marrakech and accept smaller dunes. For a wilder experience, Erg Chigaga beyond Zagora is a third option, reached by 4×4.

Why most travellers choose Merzouga
Erg Chebbi is a sea of dunes about 22 km long, rising above the village of Merzouga. This is the landscape people imagine when they think of the Sahara: golden ridges that turn red at sunset. The route there crosses the Middle Atlas or the High Atlas, the Todra and Dades gorges and the oasis of Rissani, so the journey is part of the experience. It fits naturally into a loop between Fes and Marrakech.
When Zagora makes sense
Zagora sits in the Draa Valley, the longest river valley in Morocco, lined with palm groves and old kasbahs. The drive from Marrakech is shorter and very scenic. The downside is the desert itself: the dunes near Zagora are small, and some visitors are disappointed. It works for a two-day trip when time is short.
What about Erg Chigaga?
Erg Chigaga, beyond the village of M’Hamid south of Zagora, has dunes as impressive as Erg Chebbi and far fewer visitors. It is reached only by 4×4 across rocky tracks, so it suits travellers looking for remoteness rather than comfort.
Our recommendation
- Three days or more from Marrakech: Merzouga. See how the 3-day tour works.
- A round trip in Morocco of a week or more: Merzouga, as part of a loop like our 8-day Sahara tour.
- Only two days: Zagora.
- Remote, off-the-grid adventure: Erg Chigaga.
Whichever desert you choose, the comfort of the night depends on the camp. Compare options in our guide to Sahara desert camps.
Frequently asked questions
Is Merzouga better than Zagora?
For dunes, yes. Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi has high sand dunes, while Zagora has small dunes and stony desert. Zagora’s advantage is a shorter drive from Marrakech.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
About 560 km, which takes 9 to 10 hours of driving with stops. Most tours split the journey over two days.
Can I see the Sahara in one day from Marrakech?
No. The real Sahara dunes are too far. The Agafay desert near Marrakech is a stony landscape that offers a desert-like evening, not sand dunes.
Which desert is better for a honeymoon?
Merzouga, which has a wide choice of luxury camps with private tents and bathrooms. See our honeymoon tours with the Sahara.
