Mountain landscape on a Morocco tour

8 Best Day Trips from Marrakech (Atlas, Desert and Coast)

Marrakech sits at the foot of the High Atlas, between the mountains, the desert and the ocean. That makes it a perfect base for day trips. Here are the best ones, from the easiest to the longest.

1. The Agafay desert (45 minutes)

A stony desert of rolling hills with the Atlas in the background. Ideal for a camel ride and a sunset dinner in a camp. Note that it has no sand dunes; for the real Sahara, read Marrakech to Merzouga.

2. Lalla Takerkoust lake (40 minutes)

A reservoir at the foot of the mountains, with lakeside restaurants, quad and kayak options and calm views.

3. The Ourika Valley (1 hour)

A green valley of Berber villages, riverside cafés and small waterfalls at Setti Fatma. Easy and popular, especially in summer when the city is hot.

4. Imlil and Toubkal National Park (1.5 hours)

The starting point for walks in the High Atlas, below Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 metres. A day is enough for a village walk and lunch on a terrace; climbing Toubkal itself takes two days.

5. The Three Valleys and Asni market

A scenic loop through the Atlas foothills, with a stop at a Berber weekly market and an argan or pottery cooperative.

6. Ouzoud waterfalls (2.5 to 3 hours)

Morocco’s most impressive waterfalls, dropping over red cliffs into olive groves, with Barbary macaques along the path. A long but rewarding day.

7. Essaouira (2.5 to 3 hours)

The Atlantic port town of ramparts, blue boats and grilled fish. A day trip works, but a night is better. See things to do in Essaouira.

8. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate (about 4 hours)

The UNESCO-listed kasbah over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. A very long day; spending a night in Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley is more comfortable.

Which day trip should you choose?

  • Short on time: the Agafay desert at sunset.
  • Nature and mountains: Imlil or the Ourika Valley.
  • Families: Lalla Takerkoust or Ouzoud.
  • Culture: Ait Ben Haddou, ideally with a night on the way.
  • Ocean: Essaouira.

Private or shared?

Shared minibuses are cheap but fixed. A private driver lets you leave early, avoid crowds and stop for photos. We organise private day trips from Marrakech on request; in the city itself, start with our Marrakech day tour.
