How Much Does a Trip to Morocco Cost? A Realistic Budget Guide

Short answer: Morocco can be done on a budget of around 40 to 60 euros (or US dollars) per person per day, travels comfortably at 100 to 150, and has a luxury range that starts around 250 and goes much higher. The biggest variables are where you sleep, how you move between cities and whether you add the Sahara.

The figures below are rough ranges observed in 2026 for two people sharing a room. Prices rise in spring, autumn and around Christmas, and fall in summer inland.

The currency

Morocco uses the dirham (MAD). One euro buys roughly 10 to 11 dirhams. You can only get dirhams inside the country, from ATMs and exchange offices, which usually offer fair rates.

Daily budget by travel style

StylePer person per dayWhat it looks like
Budget40–60 €Simple riads or guesthouses, street food and cafés, trains and shared taxis
Mid-range100–150 €Characterful riads, sit-down restaurants, guides in the big cities, a private driver for part of the trip
Luxury250 € and moreBoutique riads and palaces, fine dining, a luxury desert camp and a private driver throughout

Accommodation

  • Budget riads and guesthouses: about 30 to 60 € per night for a double room.
  • Mid-range riads: about 70 to 150 €, often with breakfast and a roof terrace.
  • Luxury riads and hotels: 200 € and more; Marrakech has some of the most expensive.
  • Desert camps: standard tents are much cheaper than luxury tents with a private bathroom, which can cost several times more. Read our comparison of Sahara desert camps.

Food

  • Street food and local cafés: 3 to 8 € per meal.
  • Mid-range restaurants: 12 to 25 € per person.
  • Rooftop and palace restaurants in Marrakech or Fes: 30 to 60 € and up.
  • Mint tea in a café costs less than a euro outside the main squares.

Transport

  • Trains between the big cities are cheap, often under 20 € in second class; the high-speed Al Boraq costs more.
  • Petit taxis inside cities usually cost 1 to 3 € with the meter.
  • A private driver is the most comfortable way to reach Chefchaouen, the Sahara and the gorges. The price depends on the vehicle, the number of days and the season.

Entrance fees and guides

Most monuments and museums cost between 30 and 100 dirhams (3 to 10 €). The Hassan II Mosque costs 130 dirhams for foreign adults. Popular sites such as the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech are more expensive and are best booked online. A licensed city guide costs more for a full day than a half day; prices are set per group, so they become cheap when shared.

What does a private tour cost?

A private tour bundles the driver, vehicle, fuel, accommodation and guided visits into one price. What moves the price most:

  • the number of travellers (the vehicle and guide cost is shared);
  • the hotel category, from simple riads to luxury kasbahs;
  • the season;
  • the desert camp (standard or luxury);
  • which meals and activities are included.

How to spend less

  • Travel in late November, January or early March, outside the holiday peaks.
  • Book riads directly once you have chosen them.
  • Eat lunch at local restaurants and keep the expensive dinners for special nights.
  • Use the train between Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca and Fes, and a driver only for the desert and the mountains.
  • Travel as a group of four to six: a private vehicle costs almost the same for two or six people.

Frequently asked questions

Is Morocco expensive to visit?

No. Compared with Europe, food, transport and guesthouses are inexpensive. Costs rise with luxury riads, private drivers and peak seasons.

How much money do I need for a week in Morocco?

For two people sharing, plan roughly 600 to 900 € each for a mid-range week with riads, restaurants, trains and some guided visits. A private tour with a driver throughout costs more and depends on the group size.

Should I pay in euros or dirhams?

Pay in dirhams whenever you can. Some hotels quote in euros, but prices in dirhams are usually better in shops, restaurants and taxis.

How much does a night in the Sahara cost?

It depends on the camp. Standard Berber tents are affordable, while luxury tents with private bathrooms cost several times more. The transfer to Merzouga is the larger part of the cost.
